NYC: August 5, 2011: City Parks Foundation today announces the first ever City Parks Foundation Sports & Fitness Programs Signature sponsor, North Shore-LIJ Health System. North Shore–LIJ will provide funding over two years to City Parks Foundation’s free sports and fitness programs, including: CityParks Tennis presented by Chase; CityParks Track & Field; CityParks Golf presented by the Rene Lacoste Foundation; CityParks Seniors Fitness; and the youth fitness program Get Up & Go.
These unique park-based programs offer expert instruction to over 15,000 New York youth and seniors at over 60 locations citywide, including Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island, where North Shore-LIJ offers home care and a range of outpatient and specialty services. In addition, North Shore-LIJ operates Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Staten Island University Hospital, and LIJ Medical Center, Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York, Zucker Hillside Hospital and Forest Hills Hospital, all in Queens.
“As the region’s largest healthcare provider, North Shore-LIJ is expanding its reach into the communities we serve throughout the New York metropolitan area and working with progressive organizations like the City Parks Foundation to promote health and wellness activities,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “This is a great partnership that benefits thousands of young people and seniors citywide by keeping them active, fit and engaged in fun, rewarding activities that enrich their bodies and minds.”
All of City Parks Foundation’s sports and fitness programs address the needs of the whole person—physical, cognitive, emotional and social—in a supervised, structured and supportive environment. Participants develop healthy habits, the love of an active lifestyle, and vital life skills such as self-confidence, leadership and dedication to a task. North Shore–LIJ’s support will help to support and expand these initiatives by offering health and fitness professionals to offer workshops and provide tips and information to our participants.
“We are thrilled to partner with the North Shore-LIJ to increase the quality and expand the reach of our sports and fitness programs,” said City Parks Foundation Sports Director Mike Silverman. “Our programs offer New Yorkers of all ages and backgrounds a chance not only learn and develop skills, but to learn sportsmanship, patience and other skills that will help them to lead more healthy lives.”
